Zach 23rd at U23 UCI World Cup in Kalmthout, Belgium

The Rapha-Focus Cyclocross Team made it’s first appearance in a Cyclocross World Cup this past Sunday. Division 1 College National Champion Zach McDonald represented the Team and the U.S.A. in the U23 category in Kalmthout, Belgium. During his post race cool down Zach said, “the course was pretty rad as it was covered in snow and pretty technical due to the large quantities of ice hiding under the snow. I was fortunate that the traveling went quite smoothly and, unlike a few other of the guys who came over, I was able to successfully leave the Brussels airport with my bikes.”

Zach is participating in his third Eurocross Camp and will be competing in races throughout the Holidays. Next up will be the Zolder World Cup on December 26th where the he hopes to improve on Sunday’s 23rd place. The tentative schedule of events for the eighth edition of the Eurocross Camp is:

  • Saturday, December 18: Lichtervelde
  • Sunday, December 19: UCI World Cup-Kalmthout
  • Sunday, December 19: Maldegem
  • Wednesday, December 22: Team Training Race (Ardooieveld)
  • Saturday, December 25: Beernem

Team Rapha FOCUS gives back with Wheels 4 Life

Last night our fantastic sponsor crankbrothers hosted a silent auction and movie screening in SoCal to benefit Wheels 4 Life, a Hans Rey Charity. Wheels 4 Life provides free bicycles for people in need of transportation in Third World countries; partnering with local individuals, organizations, and other groups to help identify persons who sincerely are in need of a bike to be able to go to school or to work.

Chris sent over a team kit for the silent auction, which was coincidentally won by our friend Amanda, who also happened to put on the entire event. An event that raised more than $18,000 for Wheels 4 Life! So, congrats to Amanda on both winning the Team Rapha FOCUS team kit and her great work with the charity.

Cyclocross Nationals, Recap

The boys rode strong races in Bend, OR this past weekend despite a few unfortunate incidents with spectators on the course. Zach was on a tear both days this weekend. Starting with the U23 race on Saturday, grabbing the early lead in the race and going toe to toe for the entire race with Danny Summerhill. The two walked away from a hard charging field, but Zach would ultimately roll in on the second step of the podium in the U23 Championship race on Saturday. Zach returned on Sunday, to defend his Collegiate title and take another shot at conquering the course at Deschutes Brewery. Zach was part of the early group of three consisting of Brady Kappius (who took the hole shot and lead for the first lap) and Eric Thompson. Zach prevailed in the end, to defend his Collegiate D1 title.

Chris had a strong and fast opening, hitting the front as the lead group was just starting to form. Unfortunately, an early crash saw Chris leave that front group and from there on out, it was all damage control; but it just wasn’t Chris’ day, coming in 15th place.

From here, Chris takes some time off before focusing on his road program with United Healthcare Pro Cycling presented by Maxxis and Zach is taking a little break before heading over to Europe for more cyclocross action in the 8th annual Euro Cross Camp based in Belgium.
