The Rapha-Focus boys scored a pair of podium appearances this weekend as UCI Cyclocross racing returns to California in San Dimas at Krosstoberfest presented by Focus Bicycles. “Focus was the title sponsor of the weekend’s festivities so I wanted to ride well for them. After coming off a challenging USGP in Madison last weekend, I was focused on turning things around this weekend,” said Chris who took the early lead on Saturday but was pushed back to 15th after a mechanical issue on the second lap; Jones spent the rest of the 60 minute race fighting his way back to the front group and pulled off a 3rd place finish to Sid Taberlay (Sho-Air) and Danish National Champion Joachim Parbo (Kch Leopard Cycles).
Sunday saw Jones charging at the front again with a strong group that included the previous day’s winner, eventual winner Danny Summerhill (Garmin/Holowesko Partners), and Alex Candelario (Kelly Benefits). Halfway through the race Jones and Sumerhill would leave the front group for good, which included teammate Zach McDonald, to battle for the win. Chris finished one step better than the day before to round out a pair of podium appearances on the weekend. The last lap saw Zach leave the remaining chase group with Jeremy Ferguson (California Giant Berry Farms/Specialized) in hopes of chasing down Jonathan Baker (Hudz-Subaru) for the last step on the podium, Zach finished strong on the day in 5th and came away from the weekend with a pair of 3rd place U23 finishes.
Looking ahead to next weekend, Jones says “I’ll face a tough field of riders this weekend in Cincinnati, but aim to keep the podium appearance streak alive.”
